The World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) announces that the Travel and Tourism sector in Germany is on track to recover to 95% of pre-pandemic levels, significantly contributing to the economy and employment in the country.

The 2023 Economic Impact Research (EIR) by the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) has revealed encouraging data for the Travel and Tourism sector in Germany. According to the report, the sector is experiencing a robust recovery and is expected to reach 95% of pre-pandemic levels. It is projected to contribute €355 billion to the national economy this year, equivalent to 9.3% of the GDP and reaching 95% of its peak in 2019.

Particularly positive news is that the sector is expected to generate over 168,000 jobs throughout the year, recovering most of the jobs lost due to the pandemic. This would be a crucial step towards full recovery, as the travel and tourism sector accounts for one in eight jobs in Germany.

Julia Simpson, President and CEO of WTTC, commented, "The travel and tourism sector in Germany is recovering strongly. It will contribute €355 billion to the German economy this year and employ one in eight jobs across the country." Simpson also forecasted that Germany will maintain its position as the fifth most popular tourist destination in Europe in the coming decade.

The long-term outlook is also promising, as WTTC predicts that the travel and tourism sector's contribution to Germany's GDP will surpass €440 billion by 2033, representing 10.3% of the economy. This would be accompanied by employment of nearly 6.1 million people in the country, meaning one in seven Germans would be working in the sector.

At the European level, the travel and tourism sector also shows signs of recovery. In 2022, it contributed €1.9 trillion to the regional economy, nearing the 2019 peak level. It is expected that in 2023, the contribution will reach over €2 trillion, showcasing the sector's resilience despite the challenges of the pandemic. Employment in the region has increased compared to the previous year but still remains below pre-pandemic levels.
