USA Beats Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0 to Reach FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16, Sets Up Showdown with Belgium
The United States Men's National Team (USMNT) advanced to the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup 2026 with a determined 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina on Wednesday night at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California. Despite playing with 10 men for the final 30 minutes, Mauricio Pochettino's side held firm to secure its first World Cup knockout-stage victory since 2002.
The Americans will now face Belgium on Monday, July 6, in Seattle, with a place in the quarterfinals on the line.
Balogun breaks through before halftime
The United States dominated possession throughout much of the first half but struggled to convert several scoring opportunities. Folarin Balogun had an early goal ruled out for offside before finally breaking the deadlock in first-half stoppage time.
After a series of dangerous attacks led by Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, and Antonee Robinson, the ball deflected kindly into Balogun's path, allowing the striker to slot home and give the U.S. a deserved 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
Red card creates tense second half
The match took a dramatic turn in the 64th minute when Balogun received a straight red card following a VAR review for stamping on a Bosnia and Herzegovina player.
Reduced to ten men, the United States was forced into a defensive battle as Bosnia pushed forward searching for an equalizer.
Coach Mauricio Pochettino reorganized his team effectively, and goalkeeper Matt Freese helped preserve the lead during Bosnia's best spell of the match.
Tillman seals the victory
Any remaining nerves disappeared in the 82nd minute when Malik Tillman curled a spectacular free kick over the wall and into the net to double the American advantage.
The goal capped an impressive team effort and ensured the U.S. safely advanced despite playing much of the second half a man short.
Pulisic returns to the starting lineup
One of the biggest positives for the United States was the return of Christian Pulisic, who started after recovering from a calf injury suffered during the group stage.
Although he had a second-half goal disallowed for offside, the AC Milan star consistently created chances and provided leadership throughout the match.
Belgium awaits
The victory sends the United States into one of the marquee Round of 16 matchups of the tournament.
Belgium, one of Europe's traditional football powers, will provide a major test for Pochettino's squad as the Americans seek their deepest World Cup run in more than two decades.
After topping Group D and surviving a difficult knockout opener under challenging circumstances, confidence continues to grow inside the U.S. camp ahead of Monday's showdown in Seattle.
