Saudi Arabia’s Tourism Vision: Exclusive Interview with Minister Ahmed Al Khateeb
Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – November 9, 2025. In an exclusive interview with ABC MUNDIAL, Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Tourism, Ahmed Al Khateeb, shared his vision for the present and future of global tourism during the 26th UN Tourism General Assembly (#UNTGA26) and the celebration of the organization’s 50th anniversary.
Al Khateeb highlighted the recent election of Shaikha Nasser from the United Arab Emirates as the new Secretary General of UN Tourism, the first woman and youngest person to hold the position. “We had a very active day with a heavy agenda, and we are very happy to have elected the first woman SG for UN Tourism. This is important news for Riyadh and for women. They represent around 40% of this industry globally and play a vital role in every process, whether in airlines, airports, or hotels,” the minister explained.
Regarding industry development, Al Khateeb emphasized the importance of collaboration between the public and private sectors. “As governments, we establish rules and regulations; the private sector makes the investments, builds, and operates. We cannot work in silos without close coordination with the private sector. Sustainability and connectivity are challenges we must overcome together,” he stated. Saudi Arabia has worked intensively over the past five years to bridge the gap between the two sectors and promote effective cooperation.
The minister expressed optimism about the future of tourism: “Our industry is growing rapidly and continues to create jobs. In the past, one out of every ten jobs was created by this sector; by 2035, it is expected to generate one out of every three jobs globally.” He also highlighted the importance of projecting Saudi Arabia internationally while welcoming the world to the country. “I have visited 121 countries, and I believe it is essential to travel, understand other cultures, and listen to different opinions. This ensures that the voices of smaller countries are heard, and we have been advocates for the tourism industry in the Caribbean, the Pacific, Latin America, and Africa,” he added.
During the opening ceremony of #UNTGA26, Al Khateeb underlined tourism’s role as a driver of economic and social development, reaffirming the Kingdom’s commitment to sustainability and international cooperation:
“In recent years, the tourism sector has proven to be a key driver of economic growth and social development, contributing to improving the lives of people and communities around the world. Within the framework of UNTGA26, we reaffirm our commitment to highlight the fundamental role of this sector, strengthening collaboration with global tourism leaders to promote sustainability and global prosperity,” the minister said.
Additionally, he highlighted the signing of agreements with representatives of the tourism sector from various countries. “Through these agreements, we aim to unify efforts, visions, and objectives to promote a more dynamic, prosperous, and sustainable tourism sector for future generations,” concluded Al Khateeb.
