Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. As part of the 26th UN Tourism General Assembly (#UNTGA26), Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Tourism, Ahmed Al Khateeb, led the opening ceremony of the gathering that brings together leaders of the global tourism sector. In his speech, he highlighted the role of tourism as a driver of economic and social development and reaffirmed the Kingdom’s commitment to sustainability and international cooperation.

“In recent years, the tourism sector has demonstrated its capacity as a key engine of economic growth and social development, helping to improve the lives of people and communities around the world. Within the framework of #UNTGA26, we reaffirm our commitment to emphasizing the fundamental role of this sector, strengthening collaboration with global tourism leaders to promote sustainability and prosperity worldwide,” said Al Khateeb.

During the inauguration, Zurab Pololikashvili, the outgoing Secretary-General of UN Tourism, also spoke, expressing his recognition of Saudi Arabia for its transformative vision and leadership in opening the country to the world.

Pololikashvili recalled the advances the Kingdom has experienced in recent years, from the implementation of the electronic visa to the consolidation of major tourism projects such as the Red Sea and NEOM, symbols of the new Saudi model of sustainable development and global openness.

“Saudi Arabia has become one of the most forward-looking nations with an unprecedented commitment to tourism, both within its borders and beyond. The results speak for themselves: the Executive Council meetings, World Tourism Day, and now this General Assembly confirm the Kingdom’s leading role on the international stage,” Pololikashvili emphasized.

The Assembly, held in Riyadh, also marks the 50th anniversary of UN Tourism, a symbolic occasion where member states will discuss the challenges and opportunities of global tourism in the coming decade.

Through hosting the General Assembly, Saudi Arabia consolidates its position as one of the key hubs of global tourism and reinforces its role as host of major international events, such as Expo 2030 and the FIFA World Cup 2034.
