Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from the Argentina national team, closing a 20-year international career that transformed Argentine football and established him as one of the most influential players in the history of the sport.

The 39-year-old Argentina captain made the announcement through an emotional statement published on social media, explaining that he had spent considerable time thinking about his future with the national team before reaching his decision.

“After all this time since the final, and after thinking about it a lot, I want to tell everyone that I am retiring from the national team,” Messi wrote.

He said he leaves with “the peace of mind and pride” of having given Argentine fans, together with his teammates, moments they had once only dreamed of.

Messi ended his farewell with a message that encapsulates his emotional connection to Argentina.

“Thank you, God, for making me Argentine. Vamos Argentina!”

Those words close a chapter that lasted two decades and became much bigger than football.
