The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), in collaboration with VFS Global, has unveiled a comprehensive report predicting a significant economic boost for the Latin American (LATAM) Travel & Tourism sector. According to the report titled "Unlocking Opportunities for Travel & Tourism Growth in LATAM," the region's economy could see an influx of nearly US$260 billion and the creation of almost eight million new jobs over the next decade.

The report highlights that this potential growth hinges on implementing three pivotal policies: enhancing transport infrastructure, simplifying visa facilitation, and robust tourism marketing. These measures are expected to unlock an annualized growth rate of 3.4%, ultimately contributing nearly US$909.2 billion to the region's economy.

Current Contributions and Future Potential
In 2023, Travel & Tourism in LATAM contributed more than US$629 billion to the region's economy, attracting 86 million international travelers. This sector was also crucial for employment, supporting over 24.6 million jobs, which accounts for 9% of all jobs in the region.

Julia Simpson, WTTC President & CEO, commented on the sector's transformative growth: "LATAM's Travel & Tourism sector has witnessed extraordinary growth, contributing significantly to the region's economy. With the right policies, it could unlock an additional US$260 billion in the next decade."

Simpson emphasized the need for countries in the region to invest in better transport infrastructure, streamline visa processes, protect biodiversity, and implement effective marketing campaigns to highlight LATAM's diverse destinations.

Strategic Partnership and Vision
Zubin Karkaria, Founder and CEO of VFS Global, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership with WTTC: "We are delighted to partner with WTTC to unlock the immense potential that Travel & Tourism offers in LATAM. Since establishing our presence in LATAM in 2009, we have become the trusted partner of 18 governments, serving 29 cities across 17 countries. Our expertise in visa services and tourism promotion is crucial for harnessing LATAM's potential."

Karkaria also highlighted the importance of upskilling the workforce, which is a vital component in the tourism sector. He emphasized that the comprehensive report serves as a roadmap for stakeholders, including governments and National Tourism Boards, to develop strategies that unlock the continent's economic potential, attract investments, and boost inbound arrivals.

Overcoming Challenges and Moving Forward
The report provides an in-depth look at the historical journey of the Travel & Tourism sector in LATAM, which has faced numerous challenges, including the Global Financial Crisis in 2008, disease outbreaks, and political instability. Despite these setbacks, the sector is on a path to recovery.

The WTTC projects that 2024 will be a record-breaking year for LATAM, with a GDP contribution of more than US$650 billion and the creation of an additional one million jobs, raising the total to 25.7 million.

Opportunities for LATAM
To capitalize on these opportunities, the report underscores a strategic approach that integrates investments in infrastructure, improves air connectivity, and simplifies visa procedures. It also highlights the importance of protecting biodiversity and nature through better water management and low-carbon energy use.

These efforts aim to attract more tourists while ensuring environmental sustainability. Leveraging digital technologies can enhance the travel experience and optimize marketing strategies through data-driven insights. Investing in local communities and natural preservation enriches the visitor experience and ensures that Travel & Tourism is sustainable and inclusive.

Finally, implementing safety measures builds trust and sustains growth in the Travel & Tourism sector. This cohesive strategy aims to strengthen LATAM's position as a competitive and appealing global destination.

By adopting these recommendations, the LATAM Travel & Tourism sector could unlock its potential for environmental preservation, job creation, and economic development, setting the stage for a prosperous future.
