Montego Bay, Jamaica – During the recent press conference at the Caribbean Travel Marketplace 42 of the CHTA, Josephine Connolly, Minister of Tourism of the Turks and Caicos Islands, highlighted the impressive achievements and promising future of the Caribbean destination.

"It is an honor for me to address you once again at the Caribbean Travel Marketplace, representing the Turks and Caicos Islands, a shining beacon of success and sustainability in the Caribbean tourism landscape," Connolly stated.

Since the pandemic in 2023, the Turks and Caicos Islands have emerged as the best-performing destination in the Americas, according to the World Tourism Organization. Connolly revealed that arrivals to the islands have surpassed pre-pandemic figures, with a 125% increase over 2019. For 2024, the destination continues to break records, reaching 271,326 air arrivals in the first four months, an increase of 10.2% compared to the same period in 2023.

Connolly highlighted the notable performance of the UK and European markets, with a significant increase in passengers from these regions between January and April 2024. This increase is largely attributed to the commencement of direct Virgin Atlantic flights from Heathrow, London, to Providenciales, which began on November 4, 2023. Additionally, twice-weekly flights were introduced by Virgin Airlines from Germany, Switzerland, Spain, and the Netherlands. Projections based on ticket purchases indicate an even more promising outlook for the rest of the year, with a 54% increase in arrivals from the UK and significant increases from France, Italy, and Germany.

Commitment to Sustainability

Despite the unprecedented growth, Connolly reaffirmed the commitment of the Turks and Caicos Islands to sustainability. "We understand the delicate balance between development and preservation, and we are proud to lead by example," she stated. The islands are the first Caribbean nation to implement a carrying capacity study, an innovative initiative that will guide development while safeguarding the environment and quality of life.

Infrastructure Improvements and Visitor Experience

Connolly also announced several infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing the visitor experience and minimizing congestion at the airport. These include the immediate expansion of the terminal, the relocation of airline offices, the expansion of security screening areas, and the construction of a new airport. "The government recently approved a public-private partnership framework for this project, ensuring our facilities continue to operate at the highest standards," Connolly explained.

Ongoing Development and Quality Service

The minister also emphasized that properties on the islands continue to develop to offer world-class services. "Our establishments remain at the forefront, guaranteeing an unparalleled experience for all our visitors," she concluded.

With a balanced focus on development and preservation, and with continuous growth in tourist arrivals, the Turks and Caicos Islands are solidifying their position as an exemplary tourist destination in the Caribbean, offering a unique combination of natural beauty, sustainability, and service excellence.
