Lando Norris won a wild and unpredictable Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort, securing his second straight victory of the 2026 season after overhauling championship leader Kimi Antonelli in the closing stages. George Russell completed the podium for Mercedes, while home favorite Max Verstappen's race ended in dramatic fashion just one lap in.

A race stopped almost before it started

The Grand Prix suffered an early setback when Oliver Bearman's Haas failed on the way to the grid, forcing officials to abort the original start and send the field around for another formation lap. Chaos struck again barely a lap into the restarted race, when Verstappen lost the rear of his Red Bull on a damp patch of track and crashed heavily into the wall, bringing out yellow flags and, shortly after, the red flag. The four-time champion walked away unhurt, but his retirement ended any hope of a fourth consecutive win at his home circuit.

Norris comes out on top after late battle with Antonelli

Once the race resumed, Antonelli made a strong start to snatch the lead from pole-sitter Norris into Turn 1, and stretched his advantage as the laps ticked by. But Norris fought back in the final third of the race, reclaiming the lead and holding on to take the win. "It was a tough race — a good one, well-fought, but the pace was strong," Norris said afterward, calling it one of his best victories of the season.

Lewis Hamilton finished fourth for Ferrari ahead of teammate Charles Leclerc, while McLaren's Oscar Piastri rounded out the top six. Liam Lawson delivered a strong result for Red Bull in seventh, ahead of Audi's Nico Hulkenberg, Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso and Alpine's Pierre Gasly, who completed the top ten.

Penalties pile up after Verstappen's crash

The aftermath of Verstappen's accident triggered a wave of investigations. Alpine's Franco Colapinto and Racing Bulls' Arvid Lindblad were both found to have overtaken rivals under yellow flag conditions at Turn 14 and were handed drive-through penalties, which they served once the race resumed. Colapinto finished 14th, picking up additional penalty points on his superlicense in the process, while Lindblad dropped to the back of the field.

Farewell to Zandvoort — for now

This Dutch Grand Prix marked the final race of the current chapter for Zandvoort on the Formula 1 calendar, closing out a return that began in 2021 after a 35-year absence from the sport. After a weekend off, the championship resumes at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza, from September 4 to 6.
