In a historic encounter, the President of Argentina, Javier Milei, and the CEO of Tesla, Elon Musk, met for the first time on Friday, solidifying a social media friendship between two fervent advocates of the free market known for criticizing government overreach and progressive cultural values. The Tesla billionaire took the Argentine president on a tour of the Tesla factory in Texas during his visit to the United States. During this visit, they discussed lithium, Brazil, and their disdain for bureaucracy. Milei and Musk pledged to work together to promote free markets.

Mr. Milei has been touring the United States in an attempt to attract investment to the Argentine economy, marking his third visit in four months, aiming to build a "strategic alliance" with the world's richest economy.

During the visit to the Tesla factory in Austin, Texas, Mr. Milei offered his support to Mr. Musk in a dispute with a Brazilian judge over the billionaire's plans to unblock banned accounts on X, formerly known as Twitter. Posting a photo of himself with the Argentine president, Musk wrote: "For an exciting and inspiring future! ... Freedom!" In a similar post, Milei wrote: "Long live freedom!"

The meeting followed months of supportive comments between them on social media.

The Argentine president was elected in November after promising "limited government, respect for private property, and free trade." He has argued that adopting the US dollar as currency would help control rampant inflation.

Reportedly, Milei has backed Musk in a "freedom of speech" dispute involving X in Brazil.

A dispute between Musk and Brazil erupted last weekend when a Supreme Court judge opened an investigation against the billionaire after Musk said he would reactivate accounts on the social media platform X that the judge had ordered blocked.

Musk accused Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes of "aggressive censorship."

He said: "This judge has imposed massive fines, threatened to arrest our employees, and cut off access to X in Brazil.

"As a result, we will probably lose all revenue in Brazil and have to close our office there. But principles matter more than profit."
