Almost 80 Million Expected to Travel Across the U.S. Over Thanksgiving in Record-Breaking Getaway
This Thanksgiving is set to break travel records, with nearly 80 million Americans planning to journey 50 miles or more, according to AAA. The forecast surpasses pre-pandemic figures, reflecting a strong rebound in holiday travel.
AAA predicts that 71.7 million will travel by car, benefiting from gas prices below last year’s $3.26 per gallon average. Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons are expected to see peak road traffic, especially in metropolitan areas like New York, Los Angeles, and Washington, DC. However, Thanksgiving Day itself is generally free of congestion.
Air travel is also reaching new heights, with a record 5.84 million Americans set to fly, marking a 9% increase from 2019. International flights have seen a 23% rise, with Orlando and other warm-weather Florida destinations topping the list for domestic travel.
Other transport options, including buses, cruises, and trains, are up 9% from last year. Despite weather warnings for rain and snow across much of the U.S., the holiday period promises to showcase the resilience and enthusiasm of travelers returning to traditional Thanksgiving celebrations.
