President Tsai Ing-wen vows to strengthen ties with Taiwan's allies
"I think what I'm doing is in Taiwan's best interest, and [I hope] the future president will do the same," Tsai told reporters, referring to her foreign policy.
Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen stated that she is committed to developing partnerships based on the spirit of mutual support and shared values with her diplomatic allies.
Tsai made the remarks at a meeting with national media in Los Angeles at the end of her 10-day state trip to Guatemala and Belize. The visit helped people in Taiwan better understand the cooperation programs and relations between the nation and its Central American allies, the president said.
Tsai cited the firm support of the President of Guatemala, Alejandro Eduardo Giammattei Falla, in the international arena; as well as democratic health and prosperity projects such as the Chimaltenango National Hospital, built in collaboration with Guatemala, and the sheep and goat breeding project implemented by the nation's Technical Mission in Belize.
The assistance of Laura Rosenberger, president of the American Institute in Taiwan, for the US transit stop was greatly appreciated, Tsai said.
Also, the meeting with Kevin McCarthy, Speaker of the US House of Representatives and 18 other members of Congress held in California, provided an opportunity for the two parties to exchange views on bills relevant to the nation. that are being discussed in the US Congress, indicated the president.
Tsai noted that the meeting was conducive to peace and stability across the Straits as well as in the region, adding that she hoped China could avoid any overreaction.
A strong relationship with like-minded partners is just as important as maintaining strong friendships with allies, the president said, adding that the government will continue to engage in international affairs while striving to win even more support from the world community.
Tsai also thanked the diplomatic staff for organizing her first post-pandemic state visit.
