President Tsai Ing-wen of Taiwan delivered a National Day address in Taipei on Tuesday, emphasizing the importance of peace and the need for a peaceful coexistence with Beijing across the Taiwan Strait.
"I think what I'm doing is in Taiwan's best interest, and [I hope] the future president will do the same," Tsai told reporters, referring to her foreign policy.
The five-member delegation, led by Senator Ed Markey of Massachusetts, will meet President Tsai Ing-wen and attend a banquet hosted by the foreign minister, Joseph Wu, during the visit, according to Taiwan’s foreign ministry.
Taiwan will discuss easing the import and export of COVID-19 vaccines with the United States when it holds trade talks with Washington this week, which will help in bringing the pandemic under control, President Tsai Ing-wen said on Tuesday.
In her address, Tsai said Taichung residents are witnessing history in the making as an MRT system has been a dream of local people for more than 30 years.
President Tsai Ing-wen reiterated Taiwan's willingness to work with the United States to preserve peace and stability in the region.
The delegation will meet with President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) on Thursday and other top Taiwanese officials responsible for national security, foreign affairs, and national defense during their stay.
