What We Know About Tyler Robinson, the 22-Year-Old Suspect in Charlie Kirk’s Killing
Utah Governor Spencer Cox confirmed that the FBI has arrested Tyler Robinson, 22, suspected of killing conservative activist Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University (UVU).
“We got him,” Cox said at a press conference, noting that Robinson remains in Utah County Jail and will face charges of aggravated homicide, obstruction of justice and firearm discharge causing injury.
According to CBS News, Robinson’s father recognized his son in FBI-released surveillance images and urged him to surrender. Robinson was taken into custody late Thursday after a day-and-a-half manhunt.
Background
Tyler Robinson grew up in southern Utah and was enrolled in an electrical technical program. Family members, active in the Mormon church, told investigators he had become increasingly political and vocal about his dislike of Kirk in recent years.
Authorities say Robinson was not a UVU student. He drove a gray Dodge Challenger —matching the vehicle captured on security cameras— and allegedly used Discord to discuss retrieving and hiding a rifle prior to the attack.
Key Evidence
Investigators found a bolt-action rifle wrapped in a dark towel with a telescopic sight and unusual inscriptions on bullet casings. These details align with messages reportedly sent by Robinson, strengthening the case against him.
Investigation Ongoing
Officials believe Robinson acted alone, but the investigation continues to determine the motive and whether there are additional elements to the crime. The killing has sparked nationwide debate about political violence in the United States.
