The U.S. travel industry is facing a troubling outlook with a sharp decline in international visitor spending in the United States. Geoff Freeman, CEO of the U.S. Travel Association, emphasized the urgent need to send a clear message to global travelers: they are welcome.

According to data from the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), international visitor spending is projected to drop by $12.5 billion this year, an unprecedented figure for the U.S. Oxford Economics highlights that the U.S. will be the only country experiencing such a significant decline.

Freeman pointed out that while the U.S. understands the challenges related to illegal immigration, the international perception is being affected, leaving many travelers confused and wondering if they are truly welcomed.

One of the key factors contributing to this situation is the costly and lengthy visa process, combined with stricter immigration policies implemented in recent years, which have caused uncertainty and apprehension among potential visitors.

Despite this scenario, industry experts remain hopeful that international events such as the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with matches held in cities like Philadelphia, will help reverse this negative trend and boost tourism.

Freeman concluded, “We need to let travelers around the world know that we want their business. It’s essential for the U.S. to present itself as an open and welcoming destination to strengthen its position in the competitive global tourism market.”
