January 1, 2025 — Taipei.- In his first New Year’s Day address as Taiwan's president, Lai Ching-te delivered a speech brimming with hope and determination. Titled "Bolstering National Strength through Democracy to Enter a New Global Landscape," the address highlighted Taiwan's achievements in 2024 and set the tone for the challenges and opportunities ahead in 2025.

Key Highlights of the Speech

1. Celebrating Achievements and Resilience
President Lai began by praising Taiwan’s resilience in the face of natural disasters and external challenges. He celebrated the country’s cultural, athletic, and scientific triumphs, such as winning the Premier12 Baseball Championship and Olympic gold medals in badminton and boxing.

"Our heroes of Taiwan are defined by neither age nor discipline," Lai remarked. "They tell Taiwan's story through their outstanding performances, letting the world see the spirit and culture of Taiwan."

2. Commitment to Democracy and Global Cooperation
Lai reaffirmed Taiwan’s dedication to democracy, calling it the foundation of the nation’s strength and international trust. He underscored the importance of resolving political disputes democratically, adding:

"Democracy is Taiwan's only path forward. We will not turn back."

He also highlighted the global challenges posed by authoritarian regimes and the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East. Taiwan, he said, would continue to strengthen its defense capabilities and work closely with democratic nations to ensure peace and stability.

"The more secure Taiwan, the more secure the world," Lai asserted.

3. Strengthening Economic Resilience
Lai cited Taiwan's robust economic performance in 2024, noting record-breaking stock index growth and a leading position among the Four Asian Tigers. However, he stressed the need to diversify markets and reduce dependence on China, focusing on partnerships with the U.S., Japan, and Europe.

"Taiwan must continue enhancing its economic resilience and promoting diverse development," Lai stated.

4. Focus on Social Welfare and Generational Justice
Lai outlined several policies aimed at reducing economic disparity and ensuring generational justice. He announced increases in the minimum wage, expanded rent subsidies, and a new sports ministry to nurture young athletes. He also launched the Long-term Care 3.0 Plan to address the needs of an aging population.

"Our nation belongs to all 23 million of us," Lai emphasized, "without regard for ethnic group, generation, political party, or whether we live in urban or rural areas."

5. Vision for the Future
As the world navigates rapid changes, Lai urged unity among Taiwan’s people and government officials across party lines. He called for collaboration to implement policies that prioritize citizens’ well-being and strengthen Taiwan's position on the global stage.

"In this new year, we have many more brilliant stories of Taiwan to share with the world," Lai concluded. "Taiwan will keep going strong and stride forward into the new global landscape."

Lai's speech reinforced Taiwan’s role as a beacon of democracy and a resilient economic force. His call for unity and commitment to democratic values signals a steadfast approach to navigating global and domestic challenges in the year ahead.
