UK PM Johnson raises taxes to tackle health and social care crisis
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson set out plans on Tuesday to raise taxes on workers, employers and some investors to try to fix the health and social care system, angering some in his party for breaking an election promise.
A new health and social care levy will be introduced across the UK to pay for reforms to the care sector and NHS funding in England, the PM has said.
The tax will begin as a 1.25% rise in National Insurance from April 2022, and will be a separate levy on earned income from 2023.
Boris Johnson said it was a "difficult but responsible decision" on how to finance the changes.
He told MPs the new tax will raise almost £36bn for the NHS frontline.
