Anna Kikina, russia's only woman cosmonaut inspires new Barbie Dolls
The new doll is the part of a campaign by Mattel company called "You can be whoever you want", encouraging young girls to go into science, technology, engineering and research.
Russia’s only female cosmonaut has inspired Barbie’s latest astronaut doll from Mattel’s campaign to inspire women. 36-year-old Anna Kikina is currently the only Russian woman scheduled to go into orbit in 2022, she will be the fourth woman to travel into space and 58 years after Valentina Tereshkova was the first spacewoman.
The Russian space agency Roscosmos in a statement said Mattel released the not for sale cosmonaut Barbie which is inspired by Kikina’s “talents, successes and personal qualities.”
One of only four Russian women to fly into space, Kikina, 36, is due to go on her first mission to the International Space Station in 2022.
Kikina, who was trained as an emergency worker, was admitted to Roskosmos, Russia's space agency, in 2012.
Barbie inspired by Kikina is one-of-a-kind doll which is not for sale. The toy set includes two dolls - one wearing a spacewalking suit, and a second one in a blue flight suit with Kikina's name tag.
The first Astronaut Barbie was released in 1965, two years after Russian Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman in the world to go into space.
The statement reads that Barbie is a symbol to show that “any dream can come true-you just need to believe in yourself and move forward.”
Kikina posed with the look-alike Barbie, part of Mattel’s “You Can Be Anything” role models campaign, shown wearing a jet blue jumpsuit with Kikina’s name tag and white overall Orlan spacesuit with Roscosmos patches.
