Russell wins Australian Grand Prix as Mercedes opens the 2026 Formula 1 season with a dominant 1–2
The 2026 season of the Formula 1 began with a commanding performance from Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team at the Australian Grand Prix, where British driver George Russell secured victory at the iconic Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne.
Russell controlled much of the race and crossed the finish line after 58 laps, leading a strong one-two finish for Mercedes. His teammate, Italian rookie Kimi Antonelli, finished second in an impressive debut performance that confirmed the German team’s strong start to the championship.
The race featured several dramatic moments and incidents from the very beginning. One of the most talked-about moments involved Argentine driver Franco Colapinto, who produced a remarkable evasive maneuver at the start after encountering the stationary car of Liam Lawson on the grid. Colapinto’s quick reaction allowed him to avoid a collision in what many commentators described as one of the most impressive reflex saves of the opening round.
The race also saw several notable retirements. Local driver Oscar Piastri suffered an incident before reaching the starting grid, while French rookie Isack Hadjar was forced to retire due to mechanical issues.
Strategy also played a decisive role throughout the race. Teams adopted conservative tyre management approaches due to the traditionally low grip levels of the Albert Park street circuit early in the weekend. The evolving track conditions required careful pace control and tactical pit stop decisions.
Russell’s victory marks an important early statement in the championship battle, suggesting Mercedes could once again be a serious contender for the title after a period of rebuilding.
