In a bold move aimed at shaping the future of the Travel & Tourism industry, the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has issued a 'Call to Action' directed at EU stakeholders. This call comes as the sector surpasses employment records, currently employing over 22 million people and contributing a staggering €1.4 trillion to the European Union's economy.
The 'Call to Action' from WTTC underscores three pivotal areas for modernizing and enhancing the sector, with the goal of realizing its full potential to contribute €1.9 trillion to the European Union's economy by 2033.
WTTC forecasts that by 2033, the Travel & Tourism sector could achieve this landmark figure, amounting to one in every ten euros within the EU's economy. Furthermore, their Economic Impact Research (EIR) predicts that the sector will generate nearly 4 million additional jobs by 2033, bringing the total to 26.4 million jobs, equivalent to one in every eight jobs across the EU.
Sustainability is at the forefront of WTTC's agenda, urging the EU to conduct policy impact assessments to ensure that future legislation supports the sector's transition to a green and sustainable future. The call emphasizes the importance of aligning environmental legislation with the sector's existing commitments to reach net-zero emissions targets.
In addition, WTTC advocates for streamlined policies to facilitate seamless travel across borders, emphasizing the simplification of visa processes. The organization urges the EU to progress towards visa-free travel and the implementation of the Entry-Exit System to enhance the traveler experience.
Recognizing the significance of digitalization, WTTC calls on the European Union to accelerate the adoption of advanced technologies within the sector. This move is expected to improve efficiencies, reduce costs, and foster economic growth. WTTC supports policies that promote contactless travel and the innovative use of AI, advocating for the digitalization of passports and visa applications throughout the traveler journey.
