Kimi Antonelli wins in Japan and becomes Formula 1’s youngest championship leader
Italian driver Kimi Antonelli claimed victory at the Formula 1 Japanese Grand Prix after a strategic and eventful race at Suzuka Circuit, further cementing his strong start to the season.
Despite losing positions at the start, the Mercedes F1 Team driver capitalized on a timely Safety Car period following an accident involving Oliver Bearman, allowing him to pit at the perfect moment and regain the race lead.
Antonelli controlled the closing stages with authority, crossing the finish line more than 13 seconds ahead of Australian driver Oscar Piastri, while Monaco’s Charles Leclerc completed the podium after an intense battle.
The result not only marked his second consecutive win but also made him the youngest championship leader in Formula 1 history at just 19 years old.
Behind the podium, Britain’s George Russell finished fourth, followed by reigning champion Lando Norris and seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, in a race that once again highlighted Mercedes’ dominance at the start of the season.
The championship will now take a short break before resuming in Miami, with Antonelli emerging as the breakout star and a new benchmark in the sport.
