Trump urges Putin to end Ukraine war to help ease tensions in Iran crisis
The President of the United States, Donald Trump, revealed that during a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin he urged him to end the war between Russia and Ukraine if Moscow wants to help reduce tensions in the Middle East amid the escalating conflict involving Iran.
Trump said the call was “very good” and indicated that Putin expressed interest in playing a constructive role in addressing the international crisis.
The two leaders spoke on Monday amid reports in the U.S. press that Russia may have provided intelligence support to Iran following the military offensive launched more than a week ago by the United States and Israel, although Trump dismissed those reports over the weekend.
The U.S. president added that the Russian leader was “very impressed” by the American military strike against Iran, saying that “no one has ever seen anything like it.”
Russia proposes political and diplomatic solution
According to the Kremlin, the conversation was “frank and constructive” and marked the first direct contact between the two leaders in 2026. During the call, Putin reportedly presented several proposals aimed at achieving a rapid political and diplomatic settlement to the conflict in the Middle East.
Kremlin foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov said the Russian president outlined “various ideas” intended to facilitate a political agreement that could bring an end to the confrontation between Iran and the coalition led by the United States and Israel.
Trump, for his part, shared his assessment of the situation on the battlefield and suggested the war involving Iran could be “virtually finished,” highlighting the impact of the U.S. military operation carried out jointly with Israel.
Ukraine and global energy markets also discussed
In addition to the Middle East crisis, the two leaders discussed the ongoing war in Ukraine and potential negotiation scenarios. According to the Kremlin, recent Russian military advances could encourage renewed talks toward a political settlement.
The situation in Venezuela was also addressed during the conversation, particularly regarding the impact of the conflict on global energy markets and international oil prices.
Moscow described the exchange as “substantial and potentially useful” for advancing future diplomatic negotiations between the two powers amid rising geopolitical tensions worldwide.
Against the backdrop of simultaneous conflicts in Europe and the Middle East, the conversation between Trump and Putin reflects ongoing efforts to maintain diplomatic channels and explore possible political solutions across multiple international crises.
