MEXICO CITY — Mexico’s Army killed Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho,” leader of the Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG), during a military operation in the western state of Jalisco, authorities confirmed Sunday. The raid triggered violent retaliatory actions, including road blockades and vehicle burnings across several regions.

According to Mexico’s Secretaría de la Defensa Nacional, Oseguera Cervantes was wounded during the capture attempt in Tapalpa and died while being airlifted to Mexico City. Four alleged cartel members were killed at the scene, while three others — including Oseguera — later succumbed to their injuries. Two suspects were arrested.

Authorities seized armored vehicles, rocket launchers, and high-powered weapons. Three military personnel were injured.

U.S.–Mexico Security Cooperation

The U.S. Embassy in Mexico stated that the operation was carried out within the framework of bilateral security cooperation, with U.S. authorities providing complementary intelligence. The United States had offered up to $15 million for information leading to Oseguera’s capture.

CJNG has been identified by U.S. officials as a major trafficker of fentanyl and synthetic drugs into the United States.

Violent Aftermath

Following news of his death, coordinated roadblocks and vehicle burnings were reported in Guadalajara and other parts of Jalisco. In the tourist hub of Puerto Vallarta, social media footage showed smoke rising over the city and scenes of panic at the airport.

Canadian carrier Air Canada announced the suspension of international flights to Puerto Vallarta due to security concerns. Local authorities also suspended classes as a precaution.

A Major Blow to Organized Crime

A former local police officer turned cartel operative, Oseguera rose to lead CJNG after the fragmentation of the Milenio Cartel. Under his command, the group expanded rapidly, becoming one of Mexico’s most powerful criminal organizations with international reach.

His death marks one of the most significant blows to organized crime in recent years and could reshape the balance of power within Mexico’s criminal underworld.
