Colombia fortifies its border: Unified Command Post and 30,000 troops on alert amid Venezuelan crisis
CÚCUTA, COLOMBIA – In response to recent political and social developments in Venezuela, the Colombian government has launched a comprehensive contingency plan aimed at preserving stability and national sovereignty along the 2,219-kilometer shared border.
The cornerstone of the strategy is the establishment of a Unified Command Post (PMU) in Cúcuta, coordinating security, health, and humanitarian response efforts. The deployment includes more than 30,000 members of the Armed Forces, placed on highest alert to prevent incursions by transnational armed groups or disruptions to public order.
Migration authority statement
In an official statement issued from the PMU, Migración Colombia emphasized that the priority is to maintain a controlled, safe, and orderly flow across border crossings.
“We have real-time migratory registration technology that allows us to assess flow dynamics and strengthen the State’s response capacity. Our mission is to protect local communities and safeguard national sovereignty in the face of uncertainty in the neighboring country.”
Key border checkpoints, including Paraguachón in La Guajira and the Simón Bolívar International Bridge in Norte de Santander, are operating under reinforced identification protocols, including mandatory use of the Migrant Registration Form.
Health shield and possible economic emergency
The Ministry of Health activated a preventive epidemiological cordon at border crossings, including mandatory vaccinations and health screenings to detect infectious diseases.
Authorities confirmed that medical supplies and pharmaceuticals have been reinforced in public hospitals along the border to ensure immediate response to any humanitarian emergency.
Additionally, the national government is considering declaring an Economic, Social and Environmental Emergency in border departments to accelerate funding, particularly for hospitals currently under yellow alert.
President Gustavo Petro stressed that the measures are not acts of hostility, but necessary precautions amid regional instability. With the PMU operating permanently, Colombia seeks to centralize decision-making and prevent the border from becoming a focal point of violence during Venezuela’s political transition.
