Summer Tourism Fuels Chicago’s Economy with Record $949 Million in Hotel Revenue
Chicago’s tourism sector delivered a record-breaking summer season, generating $949 million in hotel revenue between June and August and reinforcing the city’s status as a premier U.S. destination. According to Choose Chicago, the city’s official tourism agency, visitors booked more than 3.5 million hotel rooms, surpassing the tourism record previously set in 2019.
Tourism remains a vital economic driver for Chicago, contributing an estimated $20 billion annual impact and supporting 130,000 hospitality jobs citywide. Officials emphasize that beyond revenue, the industry plays a critical role in sustaining employment and boosting the local economy.
The strong performance was fueled by high-demand weekends tied to major cultural events, including Pride celebrations in June (92,000 room nights booked), BLACKPINK’s sold-out concerts at Soldier Field in July, and the world-famous Lollapalooza festival in August.
Despite the momentum, officials remain cautious. Nationally, international air arrivals were down 7% compared to 2024, according to Axios analysis, though Chicago benefitted from steady inflows of visitors from Colombia, Spain, Japan, and Italy.
Concerns also linger over external factors that could dampen demand, such as security incidents and negative perceptions of the city. “Any time there is negative rhetoric or unsettling images surrounding our city, Choose Chicago has to work even harder to reflect the true vibrancy and positivity of Chicago. And we are,” said Kristen Reynolds, president and CEO of Choose Chicago.
Reynolds added that close collaboration with convention and events organizers is paying off. “We’re seeing the results: record-breaking summer hotel occupancy, strong meeting and event attendance, and a continued stream of visitors who are experiencing our city safely and joyfully.”
