SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS, Belgium — Mercedes youngster Kimi Antonelli delivered another statement performance in the 2026 Formula One World Championship, winning the Belgian Grand Prix at the legendary Spa-Francorchamps circuit and extending his lead in the drivers' standings.

The 19-year-old Italian produced a composed and tactical drive to claim his sixth victory of the season, overcoming a strategic challenge from Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, who briefly inherited the lead during the pit stop phase under a Virtual Safety Car. Antonelli quickly regained control and crossed the finish line comfortably ahead of Leclerc, with Max Verstappen completing the podium for Red Bull Racing.

The race proved pivotal in the title battle after Antonelli's Mercedes teammate and closest championship rival, George Russell, retired on the opening lap following a collision with Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton. Russell's early exit handed Antonelli a major opportunity to increase his advantage in the standings, and the Italian capitalized with another flawless performance.

After the race, Antonelli expressed his satisfaction at returning to the top step of the podium following several challenging weekends.

"It's great to be back on the top step after a few difficult rounds. We lost the lead with the Virtual Safety Car but managed to fight back. Charles was very quick, and we had to push until the end," Antonelli said.

Leclerc praised Ferrari's improved pace despite falling just short of victory.

"I believed in the win until the final laps. We benefited from the Virtual Safety Car, and our pace was competitive. There's still work to do, but we're moving in the right direction."

Meanwhile, Verstappen acknowledged that Red Bull lacked the pace to challenge for the victory but was satisfied with another podium finish.

The Belgian Grand Prix significantly reshaped the championship picture. Antonelli now leads the drivers' standings with 204 points, opening a 50-point advantage over Russell. Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton moved into second place in the standings with 159 points, while Leclerc remains fourth.

Further down the order, Argentine driver Franco Colapinto added valuable points for Alpine and now sits 12th in the championship with 19 points, continuing his promising rookie campaign.

With several races still remaining, Antonelli has firmly established himself as the driver to beat in Formula One's 2026 season, combining consistency, speed, and maturity well beyond his years.
