U.S.-Canada Tourism Coalition Urges Unity Amid Alarming Travel Decline
In response to a steep drop in cross-border travel, the Beyond Borders Tourism Coalition, a newly formed alliance of U.S. and Canadian tourism and trade associations, is calling on both governments to strengthen cooperation and reverse troubling industry trends.
According to the coalition’s latest statement, factors such as new U.S. entry fees, rising tariffs, budget cuts, and growing border uncertainty have significantly hindered travel between the two countries—threatening what has historically been one of the world's most robust tourism corridors.
Tourism across North America typically generates $2.5 trillion annually and supports over 21 million jobs. However, foreign visitor spending in the U.S. is now expected to drop by 11% in 2025, equating to a staggering $18 billion loss, while advance air bookings between Canada and the U.S. have fallen 70% year-over-year.
Terry Dale, President of the U.S. Tour Operators Association, warned that the economic fallout has already begun. “Our members are reporting millions in lost bookings, reduced hiring, and even operational cutbacks. If this trajectory continues, entire communities that rely on tourism will suffer.”
The coalition is urging both U.S. and Canadian leaders to prioritize negotiation, transparency, and cross-border cooperation over protectionist policies. Their message is clear: only unified action can restore traveler confidence and sustain the livelihoods of millions employed in the sector.
“The ripple effects are deeply concerning,” Dale said. “Without clear, stable, and cooperative policies, the tourism economy on both sides of the border will continue to falter.”
Beyond Borders includes influential organizations such as:
- U.S. Tour Operators Association
- Canadian Association of Tour Operators
- Adventure Travel Trade Association
- National Tour Association
- American Bus Association
- Student and Youth Travel Association
- Indigenous Tourism Association
- International Inbound Travel Association
- Destination Original Indigenous Tourism
As economic uncertainty and tariffs continue to affect consumer spending power, the coalition warns that without immediate action, the region could face long-term losses in tourism investment and growth.
