OMET strengthens global leadership in Responsible Wine Tourism during its 2nd Global Summit
The World Organization of Wine Tourism (OMET) successfully held its 2nd Global Summit on Responsible Wine Tourism, under the theme “Inspiring Responsible Wine Tourism Together.” Delegates from 20 countries gathered to share knowledge and explore sustainable strategies for the development of the global wine tourism industry.
Key discussions centered on the integration of viticulture and tourism, with a strong emphasis on sustainability, inclusion, innovation, and social responsibility as fundamental pillars for strengthening wine tourism destinations around the world.
OMET’s Founder, President, and CEO, José Antonio Vidal, led the welcome ceremony, highlighting the value chain approach that defines OMET's mission: to position wine tourism destinations as Responsible, Sustainable, and Satisfactory for both visitors and local residents. He also acknowledged the collaborative efforts of OMET’s global teams and institutional partners.
One of the summit’s major announcements was the launch of the physical headquarters of the OMET Academy, an international hub for training and professional development in wine tourism. Agreements were also signed with educational institutions in Latin America and Europe to foster global talent and knowledge exchange.
The opening ceremony featured notable figures such as Rafael Ansón, Honorary President of OMET; Harry Theoharis, former Minister of Tourism of Greece; Gabriela Testa, Minister of Tourism of Mendoza (Argentina); and Alejandra Cabrera, representing Uruguay’s Ministry of Tourism.
The academic agenda included keynote presentations and technical sessions on global certification, smart marketing, decision-making tools, economic impact indicators, and the importance of “Responsible ROI” that links tourist satisfaction with long-term destination sustainability.
OMET awarded the International Biosphere Certification to several wine tourism destinations and businesses in recognition of their best practices and commitment to responsible tourism values. The Russian group Abrau-Durso received the OMET Award for Best Responsible Wine Tourism Experience Abroad, praised for its Eco, Eno, and Ethos approach.
National and international wine tourism associations from Argentina, Spain, Portugal, Uruguay, Chile, Armenia, and Romania were recognized for their leadership and efforts to integrate the wine value chain into regional sustainable development strategies.
At the conclusion of the summit, the host destination for the next OMET Global Summit was announced: Alentejo, Portugal, a region renowned for its wine culture, innovation, and commitment to responsible tourism.
Through this 2nd Global Summit, OMET reaffirms its role as a global platform for fostering wine tourism aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and promoting cross-cultural collaboration among governments, academic institutions, businesses, and local communities.
“Wine tourism is the industry of happiness,” said José Antonio Vidal. “It is a unifying activity that connects governments, territories, travelers, and local identities through gastronomy, heritage, and nature. Thank you all for being part of the OMET international wine tourism family.”
