Lando Norris finally broke through for his first victory of the season, winning a dramatic Hungarian Grand Prix at the Hungaroring on Sunday after his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri was forced to retire from the lead late in the race. Max Verstappen took second for Red Bull, while Mercedes' Andrea Kimi Antonelli rounded out the podium in third.

The race turned on its head in the closing laps. A wave of pit strategies briefly shuffled the order, putting Antonelli in the lead ahead of Piastri and Norris, before Piastri's afternoon fell apart. The Australian, who had victory within reach, was forced to retire with a gearbox problem, triggering a Virtual Safety Car and handing the initiative to Norris, who converted the opportunity into his first win of 2026. 

Behind the leaders, the fight for the final podium spot proved just as tense. Lewis Hamilton, driving for Ferrari, had chased Antonelli for third but was hit with a penalty: the seven-time champion received a five-second penalty for exceeding the pit lane speed limit, a blow that effectively ended his hopes of catching the young Italian driver. Antonelli, in just his second full season, held on to secure a valuable result for Mercedes. 

Further down the order, Alpine endured a race to forget. Neither of the team's drivers troubled the points: Pierre Gasly finished 12th and Franco Colapinto came home 15th, a result that leaves the French constructor searching for answers as the championship heads toward its summer break. 

The victory snaps a winless run for Norris this season and reignites the intra-team title fight with Piastri, who arrived in Hungary leading the standings but leaves empty-handed after his mechanical failure. With McLaren now dominant at the front but its two drivers separated by matters largely outside their control on this occasion, the battle for the drivers' championship looks set to intensify heading into the final stretch of the calendar.
