Taiwan 'a chess player, not a chess piece': Lai
Taiwan stands firm as "a chess player, not a chess piece" amidst evolving geopolitical dynamics, reiterated President Lai Ching-te on Wednesday. Addressing the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Central Standing Committee, Lai, also the party's chairperson, emphasized Taiwan's proactive role in global affairs.
"In a rapidly changing international landscape, Taiwan is a chess player, not a chess piece," stated Lai, underscoring Taiwan's strategy to navigate global shifts while bolstering national defense and maintaining its pivotal role in the global semiconductor supply chain.
Lai reaffirmed his commitment to increase Taiwan's defense spending to over 3% of its GDP this year, marking a significant rise from the current 2-2.5% during former President Tsai Ing-wen's tenure.
Highlighting concerns over China's "gray zone" tactics, Lai pledged enhanced protection for Taiwan's undersea communication cables. Recent incidents, including damage to the Trans-Pacific Express cable in January, have raised security alarms.
Taiwan remains steadfast in its resolve to implement military reforms and safeguard national interests amid complex regional dynamics.
