Trump Proposes Renaming the Gulf of Mexico and Asserts U.S. Control Over Greenland and the Panama Canal
President-elect Donald Trump continues to make waves with bold, unorthodox declarations ahead of his inauguration. On Tuesday, Trump announced his intention to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the "Gulf of America," while refusing to rule out the use of military force to assert U.S. control over Greenland and the Panama Canal. He described control of these territories as “vital” to American national security.
Military Action “Not Off the Table”
Speaking at a press conference, Trump stated, “The Panama Canal is vital to our country. We need Greenland for national security purposes.” When pressed on whether military intervention would be considered, he replied, “I’m not going to commit to that. It might be that you’ll have to do something.”
The statements suggest a sharp departure from decades of U.S. foreign policy, which has largely emphasized self-determination and cooperation with allies over territorial expansion.
Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, hosts a significant U.S. military presence and is considered a strategic Arctic location. Denmark’s Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, reiterated her nation’s commitment to U.S. cooperation but emphasized the importance of respecting Greenland’s autonomy.
Meanwhile, Panamanian Foreign Minister Javier Martínez-Acha rejected any notion of U.S. control over the Panama Canal, stating, “The sovereignty of our canal is not negotiable and is part of our history of struggle and an irreversible conquest.”
"Make Greenland Great Again"
Trump’s interest in Greenland was further highlighted by a visit from his son, Donald Trump Jr., who landed in Nuuk, Greenland’s capital, as part of an unofficial delegation. Trump posted about the visit on social media, stating, “Don Jr. and my Reps landing in Greenland. The reception has been great. This is a deal that must happen. MAGA. MAKE GREENLAND GREAT AGAIN!”
Greenland’s government clarified that the visit was private and not an official diplomatic mission, declining to meet with Trump Jr.
A New "Golden Age of America"
Trump also proposed renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the "Gulf of America," citing U.S. dominance in the region. He described the name change as having a “beautiful ring to it” and framed it as part of a broader vision for what he called a “Golden Age of America.”
Additionally, Trump called for NATO members to increase their defense spending to 5% of their GDP, up from the current target of 2%, citing global security challenges.
Mixed Reactions
Trump’s comments have drawn criticism from allies and neighbors alike. Canadian leaders dismissed Trump’s previous suggestion of integrating Canada into the United States, with outgoing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stating, “There isn’t a snowball’s chance in hell that Canada would become part of the United States.”
Danish Prime Minister Frederiksen expressed skepticism over Trump’s rhetoric but stressed the importance of maintaining NATO unity.
Challenges Ahead
As Trump prepares to take office on January 20, his unconventional proposals underscore the challenges and controversies likely to shape his administration. With global allies watching closely, Trump’s bold declarations signal a potential shift in U.S. foreign policy and its role on the world stage.
For now, the world waits to see whether these dramatic proposals will materialize into actionable policies or remain part of Trump’s provocative rhetoric.
