Biden and Trump Secure Early Wins on Super Tuesday, Setting Stage for November Rematch
President Joe Biden and Donald Trump have swept the state primaries that were held on Super Tuesday, making a White House rematch between them even more likely.
As Super Tuesday unfolded across the nation, President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump wasted no time in notching early victories, inching closer towards a historic rematch in November, despite lukewarm enthusiasm from many voters. The outcome of these primaries could also intensify pressure on Nikki Haley, Trump’s last significant challenger, to exit the race.
Super Tuesday encompasses elections in 16 states and one territory, spanning from Alaska to California, and from Vermont to Virginia. With hundreds of delegates up for grabs, it marks the largest haul of the entire primary season for both parties. Biden and Trump emerged victorious in states including Maine, Oklahoma, Virginia, North Carolina, and Tennessee. Additionally, Biden secured wins in the Democratic primaries in Massachusetts, Vermont, and Iowa.
While much attention is focused on the presidential contest, there are also pivotal down-ballot races unfolding. In California, voters are selecting candidates who will vie for the Senate seat previously held by Dianne Feinstein. Meanwhile, the gubernatorial race is taking shape in North Carolina, with Republican Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson and Democratic Attorney General Josh Stein poised to compete in a state fiercely contested by both parties in anticipation of November. In Los Angeles, a progressive prosecutor is facing a tough reelection challenge, with the outcome serving as a potential indicator of crime-related political dynamics.
Nevertheless, the spotlight remains on 81-year-old Biden and 77-year-old Trump, who continue to dominate their respective parties despite questions about their age and without commanding broad popularity across the general electorate.
The earliest either candidate can become their party’s presumptive nominee is March 12 for Trump and March 19 for Biden. However, unlike most prior Super Tuesdays, both nominations appear effectively sealed, with Biden and Trump already looking ahead to a rematch of the 2020 general election.
On the Democrat side, current US President Joe Biden won the vote in all states, but lost in the territory of American Samoa.
For the Republicans, former president Donald Trump won everywhere except for Vermont, where he lost to Nikki Haley.
Here's the breakdown of who won what:
Biden claimed overwhelming victory in Alabama, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont and Virginia
Businessman Jason Palmer won over Biden in the territory American Samoa
Trump claimed huge victories in Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, and Virginia
In the Republican race for Vermont, however, Haley emerged victorious.
