Travel industry leaders Roger Dow, former president and CEO of the U.S. Travel Association, Elliott L. Ferguson, II, president and CEO of Destination DC, and Peter F. Herschend, co-founder of Herschend Enterprises, were inducted into the U.S. Travel Association Hall of Leaders on Wednesday.
In a ceremony held on Wednesday, the U.S. Travel Association celebrated the induction of three trailblazers into its prestigious Hall of Leaders, recognizing their exceptional contributions to the travel industry. Roger Dow, the former president and CEO of the U.S. Travel Association, was honored in 2022, while Elliott L. Ferguson, II, president and CEO of Destination DC, and Peter F. Herschend, co-founder of Herschend Enterprises, emerged as the distinguished honorees for 2023.
The ceremony, attended by over 100 U.S. Travel board members and guests, took place in Washington, DC, where the inductees were praised for their sustained and noteworthy contributions that have positively impacted the travel industry and elevated industry-wide standards.
Roger Dow, a luminary in the travel sector, was recognized for his outstanding leadership during his 17-year tenure as the chief executive of U.S. Travel. Carnival Cruise Line President and U.S. Travel National Chair Christine Duffy commended Dow's unparalleled advocacy for the travel industry, stating, "It's difficult to imagine a more effective advocate for travel today than Roger Dow."
Dow's illustrious career includes 34 years at Marriott International, where he spearheaded global sales and marketing functions, introducing the first hotel loyalty program. Under Dow's innovative leadership, U.S. Travel achieved significant legislative victories, such as the creation and renewal of Brand USA, the nation's destination marketing organization. His efforts led to a 61% increase in inbound travel to the U.S.
In addition to his legislative achievements, Dow played a pivotal role in building travel's profile in Washington, holding meetings with U.S. presidents, Cabinet secretaries, and members of Congress. He established the Meetings Mean Business Coalition, advocating for the value of business meetings, trade shows, and conventions.
Elliott L. Ferguson, II, and Peter F. Herschend, the 2023 honorees, were praised for their lasting impact on the travel industry. U.S. Travel Association President and CEO Geoff Freeman expressed pride in honoring both individuals for their invaluable contributions to strengthening travel.
The U.S. Travel board of directors will commemorate the achievements of Ferguson, Herschend, and Dow at a dinner scheduled for November 15, 2023, in Washington, DC. As the Hall of Leaders continues to grow, these inductees join a distinguished group of 106 individuals whose contributions have left an indelible mark on the travel industry.
