Modi’s Party Is Winning the Biggest Prize in India’s State Elections
Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state, is staying in the Bharatiya Janata Party’s hands.
The BJP is set to come back to power in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa, and Manipur, as the late trends of the vote counting showed, while the AAP is looking at a thumping victory in Punjab.
In Uttar Pradesh, BJP candidates have been declared winners on 48 seats and are leading on another 202. Its allies - Apna Dal (Soneylal) has won 2 seats and is leading on 9, while Nishad party is leading on 7 seats. The Samajwadi Party, on the other hand, has won 7 seats and is leading on 111 seats. Its allies - RLD and SBSP - are leading on 7 and 5 seats, respectively.
In Punjab, AAP has won 89 seats and is leading on another 3. The ruling Congress has won only 15 seats and its candidates. The Shiromani Akali Dal has won 3 seats, and the BSP and BJP 1 each.
In Uttarakhand, BJP candidates have been declared winners on 21 seats and are leading on another 26. Congress, on the other hand, has won 10 seats and is leading on another 9. The BSP has won 1 seat and is leading on 1 seat.
In Manipur, BJP candidates have been declared winners on 20 seats and are leading on another 11. Congress has only been able to bag 4 seats and its candidates are leading on 1 more seat. The Janata Dal (United) has sprung a surprise with its candidates winning 5 seats and leading on 1 seat. Three seats each have been won by the Naga Peoples Front and the National People's Party and two by the Kuki People's Alliance.
In Goa, BJP candidates have won 20 seats. Congress, on the other hand, has been able to win 10 seats and is leading on 1 seat. The AAP and MGP have won 2 seats each, while GFP and Revolutionary Goans Party have emerged victorious on one seat each. Three seats, meanwhile, have been won by independent candidates.
