Ronaldo's Coca Cola gesture followed by $4bn drop in company's market value

Cristiano Ronaldo does not appear to be a fan of carbonated soft drinks after the Portugal captain removed two bottles of Coca Cola kept in front of him at Monday's Euro 2020 press conference, encouraging people to drink water instead.

The 36-year-old moved the cola bottles aside as he sat down to speak to the media before Tuesday's Group F opener against Hungary.

He followed it by holding a bottle of water before shouting in Portuguese: 'Agua!'
Coca-Cola, one of the official sponsors of Euro 2020, could not immediately be reached by Reuters for a comment.

Cristiano Ronaldo's removal of Coca Cola bottles at a Euro 2020 press conference on Monday was followed by $4 billion being knocked off the company's market value.

Ronaldo was speaking at a press conference ahead of Portugal's game against Hungary on Monday when the soft drinks were placed in front of his seat. The 36-year-old removed them from view and said that people should 'drink water' instead.

The gesture coincided with a significant impact on Coca Cola's market value.

Coca Cola's shares were worth $56.1 each when the market opened in Europe on Monday.

But by the end of the press conference, they had fallen to $55.2 each.

That is a 1.6 per cent drop in share price, which means a $4 billion loss in market value.

That said, Coca Cola is still worth $238.35 billion overall and the value has since risen back to $55.29 a share.
