US thanks Vietnam for hosting summit with N.Korea
A US government spokesman has indicated that Vietnam was chosen as the venue for the second US-North Korea summit to symbolize the thriving partnership between former enemies.
At a news conference, the State Department's deputy spokesperson Robert Palladino thanked Vietnam for its generosity in hosting the second summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
Palladino said Vietnam is a close friend and partner of the United States. He said the history of the two nations reflects the possibilities for peace and prosperity. He added that the US and Vietnam have moved past conflict and division towards the thriving partnership that they enjoy today.
The spokesman said meetings are being held to prepare for the summit on February 27th and 28th. He said the US Special Representative for North Korea, Stephen Biegun, is now in Pyongyang and is holding talks with his counterpart, Kim Hyok Chol.
Palladino said the location of the summit in Vietnam will be disclosed when it's ready for announcement.
Some observers say the second summit is likely to be held in the central Vietnamese city of Da Nang. But sources have suggested that Washington and Pyongyang have yet to reach an agreement.
