The natural phenomena that hit the country in recent months leave a huge task ahead, rebuild the country. Enrique Peña Nieto proposed to present a report of damages, in meeting with members of the National Conference of Governors and the business sector, the formation of a coordination table with the private sector to carry out the titanic work that requires will require an investment billion for reconstruction, according to official figures released Wednesday.
The damage covers 150,000 damaged homes in several states of the country, as well as just over 12,000 schools, which will require about $ 717 million for rehabilitation, and 1,500 historic monuments, which will need about $ 440 million.
"The figures allow us to see damage to homes, cultural heritage, damage to the thousands of schools affected that will require total reconstruction," the president said after a meeting with his cabinet and local governments at his official residence in Los Pinos . He added that these are preliminary figures that can be revised as the censuses of damage are progressed.
September was a difficult month for Mexico in the face of natural disasters. Earlier this month, storm Lidia left at least seven dead in Baja California Sur, in the northwestern part of the country. On September 7, an earthquake of magnitude 8.2 struck the country and caused about a hundred deaths mainly in the southern state of Oaxaca. Subsequently, on September 19, on the 32nd anniversary of a powerful earthquake that killed 10,000 people in 1985, it was hit by an earthquake of magnitude 7.1 that has so far left 337 dead, mainly in Mexico City.
In several of the areas that suffered landslides in the capital, heavy machinery has already been used to remove debris, although rescue work continues in a building in the central neighborhood of Roma-Condesa. "In this tragedy, what we most feel today is that there have been people who died, more than 420 people, in figures that are still altering day by day. That is the number of people and families who today feel pain and sadness, "said Peña Nieto.
The president hoped that the reconstruction work could be completed in a matter of months. "I hope New Year will allow us to have a new Mexico, rebuilt and in conditions of normality," he said.
