Caribbean Travel Marketplace 2026 Opens in Antigua and Barbuda with a Call to Reinvent Caribbean Tourism
The welcome reception for Caribbean Travel Marketplace 2026 officially launched one of the region’s most important tourism industry gatherings, bringing together ministers, tourism authorities, hoteliers, tour operators, airlines, and international buyers in Antigua and Barbuda for an evening filled with Caribbean music, local gastronomy, and high-level B2B networking.
The opening event was led by Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA) Presiden president Sanovnik Destang, who emphasized the Caribbean’s strategic position as one of the world’s most resilient and desirable tourism regions, despite changing global travel trends and economic challenges.
During his remarks, Destang stressed that the future of Caribbean tourism will depend not only on large marketing budgets, but also on destinations’ ability to tell authentic stories and create memorable experiences. “The Caribbean is not one product. It is many cultures, many rhythms, many cuisines, and many experiences connected by the warmth of our people,” he told marketplace attendees.
The CHTA leader also highlighted the growing influence of digital platforms and younger audiences, noting how global content creators are showcasing a different image of the Caribbean beyond beaches and traditional resorts, emphasizing local music, urban energy, gastronomy, and the cultural identity of each island.
In that context, Destang said the regional tourism industry must adapt to new ways of promoting and commercializing destinations through innovation, digital transformation, and stronger direct connections with travelers. He also pointed to initiatives promoted by CHTA, including the Direct Booking Summit, designed to strengthen competitiveness and profitability among tourism stakeholders.
One of the evening’s most celebrated announcements was the confirmation that Gregory “Gregg” Forte will become the next president of CHTA, making him the first representative from Dominica to lead the regional organization. The reception concluded with a vibrant Caribbean celebration featuring local flavors, cocktails, live music, and a festive atmosphere reflecting the diversity and energy of the Caribbean.
