ST. JOHN’S, Antigua and Barbuda — The Caribbean once again takes center stage in the global travel and tourism industry this week with the launch of the Caribbean Travel Marketplace 2026, the most important commercial event for the Caribbean tourism sector, bringing together in Antigua and Barbuda around 500 international delegates including hotels, destinations, airlines, tour operators, international buyers, technology companies, government representatives, media outlets, and industry leaders.

The 44th edition of the annual event, organized by the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association, runs from May 12 to 15 and is headquartered at the American University of Antigua, further consolidating Antigua and Barbuda’s position as one of the leading destinations for major events and conferences in the Caribbean.

The event begins this Tuesday with the Caribbean Travel Forum, a strategic analysis platform where industry leaders are discussing the future of regional tourism, commercial trends, digital transformation, air connectivity, sustainability, and the Caribbean’s economic growth outlook.

During the forum sessions, representatives from hotels, public sector organizations, airlines, tour operators, and tourism-related companies are participating in working groups focused on the current operational and commercial challenges facing the region. The discussions aim to identify growth opportunities, strengthen regional partnerships, and explore new strategies to maintain the Caribbean’s competitiveness in the international market.

One of the central themes is the analysis of Caribbean travel trends and the need to move toward a more resilient, sustainable, and technologically integrated tourism model. The impact of artificial intelligence, digital marketing, and new direct booking tools is also being addressed as part of the industry’s ongoing modernization process.

From Wednesday through Thursday, the focus shifts to the Caribbean Travel Marketplace itself, with an intensive agenda of business meetings, commercial appointments, and networking encounters between international buyers and Caribbean tourism suppliers.

Participants include tourism boards, hotel chains, all-inclusive resorts, airlines, cruise companies, tourism technology providers, inbound operators, travel agencies, tourism advisors, and specialized media from around the world.

The Marketplace operates as a major B2B negotiation platform designed to generate new commercial agreements, expand connectivity routes, and increase international visitor arrivals across Caribbean destinations.

In addition to business meetings, the program includes press conferences, product and experience showcases, networking activities, and investment-focused sessions aimed at strengthening regional cooperation and tourism development.

On May 15, the second Caribbean edition of the Direct Booking Summit will take place, a specialized event focused on direct booking strategies, technological innovation, artificial intelligence, and digital marketing for hotels and tourism destinations.

The 2026 edition also includes Responsible Tourism Day, centered on environmental sustainability initiatives, community impact, and conscious tourism, reflecting one of the major paradigm shifts currently shaping the regional tourism industry.

Industry authorities and leaders believe the event comes at a pivotal moment for the Caribbean, a region that continues to position itself as one of the world’s fastest-growing tourism markets following years of global transformation.

Antigua and Barbuda’s Minister of Tourism, Charles Fernández, highlighted that the return of the Marketplace “reflects CHTA’s confidence in the destination’s ability to deliver top-tier events.”

Meanwhile, Colin C. James stated that the event places Antigua and Barbuda “at the center of regional tourism at a crucial moment for the global industry.”

Sanovnik Destang, on his part, emphasized that the Marketplace “is focused on concrete results, creating real business opportunities and long-term partnerships to strengthen sustainable tourism across the Caribbean.”

The Caribbean Travel Marketplace coincides with Antigua and Barbuda’s Culinary Month, allowing international delegates to experience local gastronomy and the growing experiential tourism segment, which is gaining increasing relevance across the region.

The Caribbean is currently undergoing a strong expansion phase driven by recovering international demand, new hotel investments, growth in air connectivity, expansion of the luxury segment, and a growing commitment to sustainability, technology, and authentic travel experiences.
