CHTA and CAST Mark Earth Day 2026 with Call for Collective Caribbean Action
The Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA) and the Caribbean Alliance for Sustainable Tourism (CAST) have reinforced their commitment to environmental stewardship as part of Earth Day 2026, embracing this year’s theme, “Our Power, Our Planet.”
Speaking from Fort Lauderdale, CHTA President Sanovnik Destang emphasized that the Caribbean’s natural beauty is both its greatest asset and a shared responsibility. He noted that tourism stakeholders across the region are increasingly adopting sustainable practices to reduce environmental impact while strengthening local communities.
CHTA and CAST collaborate with 32 national hotel and tourism associations, as well as governments and multilateral organizations, addressing key challenges ranging from crisis preparedness to environmental management systems. These efforts have enhanced the industry’s resilience to natural disasters and improved sustainability performance across tourism businesses.
Acting CAST Chair Karolin Troubetzkoy highlighted the importance of collective action, stressing that meaningful progress depends on collaboration, innovation, and shared best practices among stakeholders.
In partnership with the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO), both organizations are advancing initiatives to reduce energy consumption and promote renewable energy adoption within the tourism sector. Their broader sustainability agenda also includes waste management, human capital development, circular economy practices, and coral reef conservation.
