Max Verstappen secured a pivotal victory at the 2025 Qatar Grand Prix, setting up a dramatic championship showdown in Abu Dhabi after Oscar Piastri finished second and title leader Lando Norris could only manage P4. The win cuts Norris’s advantage to just 12 points ahead of the final race of the season, with Piastri remaining within striking distance, 16 points off the top.

The race at Lusail unfolded with unexpected strategic twists, triggered by an early Safety Car period following a collision between Nico Hülkenberg and Pierre Gasly. With the FIA enforcing a maximum 25-lap stint on all tyre compounds, teams were forced into unconventional pit strategies that reshaped the competitive order.

Verstappen made a rapid start from P3, overtaking Norris on the run to Turn 1 and settling in behind pole-sitter Piastri. But when the Safety Car emerged on Lap 7, McLaren chose to keep both Piastri and Norris on track, while the rest of the field—including Verstappen—pitted. This decision ultimately cost McLaren the victory.

Piastri displayed strong pace throughout the race and comfortably rejoined in net-second position after his final pit stop. Norris, however, was unable to overtake Carlos Sainz and Kimi Antonelli after emerging from the pits, losing critical time in his fight for the championship. A small off-track moment in the high-speed Turn 14 added further pressure as Verstappen closed in.

Carlos Sainz delivered a superb performance for Williams, securing his second podium of the season with a P3 finish. Mercedes’ rising star Kimi Antonelli claimed P5, helping close the gap to Red Bull in the Constructors’ standings.

Further back, Fernando Alonso survived a dramatic 360-degree spin to secure points in P7, while Charles Leclerc, Liam Lawson, and Yuki Tsunoda completed the top-10.

The race saw multiple retirements, including Hülkenberg, whose clash with Gasly triggered the early Safety Car, as well as Hadjar, Stroll, Bearman and others who suffered mechanical issues or damage.

After claiming his seventh victory of the season, Verstappen expressed satisfaction with the team’s strategic execution:

“This was an incredible race for us. We made the right call under the Safety Car—very smart. I’m super happy to win here and stay in the fight until the end.”

The stage is now set for a thrilling finale at Yas Marina, where Norris, Verstappen and Piastri will fight for the 2025 Drivers’ Championship from December 5–7.
