U.S. Hotels Launch Exclusive Discounts to Win Back Canadian Tourists
Faced with a steep decline in Canadian visitors, hotels and tourism boards across the United States are rolling out targeted discounts and perks to entice travelers from the north.
Canadian travel to the U.S. has dropped sharply in 2025, as visitors protest U.S. tariffs and political rhetoric. According to Statistics Canada, return trips by car fell nearly 37 percent in July compared to last year, while air arrivals were down more than 24 percent in May. The U.S. Travel Association warns the boycott could cost as much as $2.1 billion in lost tourism revenue.
In response, hotels are tailoring promotions exclusively for Canadian guests. Maine’s Kennebunkport Resort Collection launched an “O Canada” package with up to 15 percent off, late checkout, sparkling wine and chocolate-covered blueberries. In New York City, Sofitel New York is offering a “Bienvenue Neighbor” deal with 15 percent off and late checkout for two-night stays. Meanwhile, Boston’s Fairmont Copley Plaza introduced a “Bonjour Boston” promotion featuring 30 percent off and a free amenity through September 1.
States are also stepping in. California’s “Californians Love Canada” initiative offers discounts between 15 and 25 percent at nearly 950 hotels statewide. New York and Massachusetts have launched similar efforts, positioning themselves as welcoming destinations at a time of strained relations.
The stakes are high. Canadians represent 26 percent of all U.S. inbound tourists, making them one of the country’s most valuable visitor groups. The top five states for Canadian travelers—Florida, California, Nevada, New York and Texas—risk significant losses in retail and hospitality, as shopping remains the number one leisure activity for Canadian visitors.
While some states appear resigned to short-term losses, others see these promotions as critical lifelines. The challenge will be restoring not only Canadian arrivals, but also traveler confidence in the U.S. as a welcoming and accessible destination.
