Putin Agrees to Trump Summit Amid U.S. Ultimatum Over Ukraine War
In a significant diplomatic development, Russian President Vladimir Putin has agreed to meet next week with U.S. President Donald Trump, just before the deadline of a ten-day ultimatum issued by the White House demanding a ceasefire in Ukraine.
The announcement was made by Kremlin foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov, who confirmed, "We have agreed to hold a bilateral meeting at the highest level in the coming days."
Although the Kremlin initially wanted the summit to focus on global security and strategic stability rather than solely on Ukraine, mounting pressure from Washington forced the Russian leader to yield.
Trump stated the summit with Putin would go forward regardless of whether Putin first meets Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. “No, he doesn’t need to,” Trump responded when asked if a Putin-Zelenskyy meeting was a precondition.
While the exact location of the summit remains undisclosed, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, or Turkey are seen as likely venues. These nations have hosted critical talks and prisoner exchanges throughout the conflict.
This prospective summit marks a potential turning point in U.S.-Russia relations during Trump’s second term. However, concerns remain about the exclusion of Ukraine from the table and the unclear objectives of the meeting.
