Gloria Guevara advocates for more opportunities for women in the tourism industry
On the occasion of International Women's Day, the Mexican government's candidate for the UN World Tourism Organization Secretary-General position said that women are called to lead this sector.
On the occasion of International Women's Day, Gloria Guevara, the Mexican government's candidate for the UN World Tourism Organization Secretary-General position, emphasized the importance of creating more job opportunities for women in the travel and tourism sector.
"By supporting quality employment for women, we develop a more competitive sector. We must ensure that women play a more prominent role in the global travel and tourism sector; women are called to lead this important sector, which is one of the main drivers of the global economy," stated Guevara.
A sector with significant female participation
Currently, nearly 50% of jobs in the tourism industry are held by women, highlighting the relevance of implementing policies that foster their development and leadership. Guevara proposed that, if she becomes Secretary-General of the UN World Tourism Organization, she will push for specific agreements with member states to ensure greater inclusion of women in the sector.
Career and leadership in tourism
Gloria Guevara has over 35 years of experience in the sector, having held key roles such as Mexico's Minister of Tourism, President and CEO of the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), and Senior Special Advisor to the Minister of Tourism of Saudi Arabia. Her leadership has been crucial in the recovery of tourism after the COVID-19 crisis and in promoting innovation and sustainable growth.
A new era for tourism
Under her motto "a new era for tourism," the candidate seeks to empower local communities and promote a more resilient, inclusive, innovative, and sustainable tourism industry. Her vision is based on four key pillars: resilience, opportunities, innovation, and sustainability.
"Under my leadership, I will ensure that member states receive more support from UN Tourism to improve the conditions of those who depend on this activity," Guevara emphasized.
Her commitment is to strengthen the presence of women in the industry, drive economic development, and promote strategies that foster the sustainable growth of tourism globally.
