U.S. Travel Applauds President Trump on Establishing FIFA World Cup 26 White House Task Force
Washington, D.C. -President Donald Trump has signed an executive order creating a White House task force dedicated to the preparations for the FIFA World Cup 2026. The task force, which will be chaired by the president himself, aims to streamline coordination among federal agencies and ensure a smooth and secure experience for the millions of visitors expected for the tournament.
Vice President JD Vance will serve as vice chair, and an executive director, yet to be named, will oversee daily operations. The initiative is being hailed as a crucial step in managing the logistical and security challenges posed by the world’s most popular sporting event.
A Strategic Move for U.S. Tourism and Economy
U.S. Travel Association President and CEO Geoff Freeman praised the creation of the task force, emphasizing its importance in preparing the country for an influx of over eight million international visitors. “The creation of this task force was a top priority for U.S. Travel and will ensure the U.S. is fully prepared to host the world’s largest sporting event,” Freeman said. “This effort lays the foundation for a truly transformative decade of major events.”
Hosting the World Cup is expected to bring massive economic benefits, with FIFA President Gianni Infantino estimating an impact of approximately $40 billion and the creation of around 200,000 jobs. Trump, who was president when the U.S. secured its co-hosting bid alongside Canada and Mexico in 2018, considers the event a major achievement. He has even displayed a replica of the World Cup trophy in the Oval Office, underscoring the tournament’s significance to his administration.
Addressing Concerns in U.S. Travel Infrastructure
Despite the excitement surrounding the event, travel industry leaders have expressed concerns about the country's readiness to accommodate such an immense volume of visitors. Freeman and William Hornbuckle, CEO of MGM Resorts International, have pointed out potential challenges, including long visa processing times, outdated technology, and airport congestion. “Trying to pull all of these agencies together to act as one is very complicated,” Hornbuckle noted. He highlighted that most countries have dedicated ministries for tourism and sports, whereas the U.S. lacks a centralized system.
By forming this task force, Trump’s administration aims to address these concerns head-on. The committee will focus on expediting visa processes, enhancing airport efficiency, and ensuring robust security measures to facilitate seamless travel experiences for fans arriving from around the world.
A Grand Opportunity for the U.S.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup, the first to feature 48 teams, presents an unparalleled opportunity for the U.S. to showcase its hospitality and infrastructure on a global scale. Trump has positioned the event as part of his broader economic strategy, leveraging it to attract foreign investment and reaffirm America’s status as a premier destination for major international sporting events.
“The U.S. will welcome the world,” Infantino stated during the announcement. “There will be millions of people coming, Mr. President, millions of people.”
The tournament, which will take place across several major U.S. cities, is expected to require extensive inter-agency cooperation. The task force will work closely with FIFA, local governments, and the private sector to ensure successful execution.
As preparations intensify, all eyes will be on the effectiveness of this new task force in delivering a world-class experience for athletes, fans, and stakeholders alike. The 2026 FIFA World Cup is poised to be one of the most significant sporting events in U.S. history, with its impact extending far beyond the final whistle.
