Florida has once again broken tourism records, welcoming 142.9 million visitors in 2024, according to VISIT FLORIDA. Nearly 30 million of those travelers arrived in the fourth quarter alone, demonstrating the state's continued appeal as a top destination.

Governor Ron DeSantis attributed the sustained tourism growth to his COVID-19 policies, emphasizing that Florida remained open while other states imposed strict pandemic restrictions. He pointed out that this approach led to a "massive boom" in marine-related manufacturing, as many people relocated to Florida from states with harsher measures.

“This is the highest number on record,” DeSantis announced at the Miami International Boat Show. “In 2024, Florida broke yet another tourism record, with 142.9 million visitors. That includes almost 30 million in the fourth quarter alone, and nearly 3 million from overseas. Much of that growth is happening in South Florida, and our tourism industry is thriving.”

Compared to 2023, Florida saw an increase of approximately 2 million visitors, marking another significant milestone for the state's economy. The Governor emphasized that Florida’s handling of the pandemic played a crucial role in attracting new residents and boosting various industries, particularly marine-related manufacturing.

“The marine industry benefited significantly from Florida staying open during COVID,” DeSantis stated. “People were leaving Illinois, New York, and other states with draconian policies, choosing to settle in Florida. Many bought homes and embraced the lifestyle here.”

He also defended Florida’s pandemic-era policies, citing the state’s resilience and economic success. “Some people questioned why we allowed fishing and boating during COVID. But realistically, you’re not going to catch COVID while fishing in the ocean,” he said. “The results speak for themselves.”

Record-Breaking Growth Announced Again

On February 12, 2025, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis reaffirmed Florida’s status as the top travel destination by announcing the highest tourism numbers in state history. The record-breaking 142.9 million visitors in 2024 marked a 1.6% increase over 2023, the previous record year.

The fourth quarter of 2024 also set a new benchmark, with 33.1 million visitors—the highest ever recorded in a fourth quarter. This included 29.9 million domestic visitors, 2.5 million international visitors, and 742,000 Canadian visitors.

“Florida is the best place to visit, live, and do business,” DeSantis stated. “Another record-breaking year proves that leadership matters, and the Free State of Florida is a model for the nation.”

J. Alex Kelly, Florida’s Secretary of Commerce, echoed this sentiment. “Under Governor DeSantis’ bold leadership, Florida’s tourism industry continues to be a global leader. Despite a challenging hurricane season, the state’s tourism sector continues to drive economic growth and enhance the quality of life for Florida communities and families.”

Despite the challenges posed by hurricanes Helene and Milton, Florida’s tourism industry remained strong. Hotel occupancy rose by 6.7% in the fourth quarter, and total hotel nights sold increased by 1.6% in 2024. Florida’s airports also saw continued growth, with total passenger boardings rising by 3.1% year over year.
