Journalist and host Jorge Lanata, one of the most iconic figures in Argentine journalism, passed away this Monday at the age of 64 after an extensive hospitalization at the Italian Hospital of Buenos Aires. Since June 14, Lanata had been receiving medical attention after suffering a cardiac arrest during a routine check-up, marking the beginning of a complicated clinical condition that extended over six months.
Lanata, creator of iconic programs such as Periodismo Para Todos and Lanata sin Filtro, spent his final days in the intensive care unit. Despite the hopes of his family and close ones that he could be transferred to a rehabilitation center, complications in his condition prevented that step. According to his wife, Elba Marcovecchio, days before Christmas, "intensive care is a day-by-day situation."
A Complex Clinical Condition
The latest official medical report, issued on December 6, stated that Lanata was "alert, afebrile, and on mechanical ventilation during the night," with hemodynamic stability. However, his overall condition remained delicate. His eldest daughter, Bárbara Lanata, frequently updated the press on her father's health, describing his condition as "stable but still fragile," highlighting the challenges associated with his prolonged hospitalization, such as the aftermath of a tracheostomy and the need for gastric feeding through a tube.
Lanata had undergone several surgical interventions, including the removal of 70 centimeters of intestines due to intestinal ischemia in October, a procedure that marked a critical point in his treatment.
Legacy and Career
With a decades-long career, Jorge Lanata left a profound impact on Argentine journalism. Founder of the newspaper Página/12 and host of renowned radio and television programs, Lanata was known for his incisive style and commitment to investigative journalism. He was a controversial and influential figure in the country’s media landscape.
In recent years, Lanata faced numerous health issues, including pneumonia, systemic infections, and respiratory difficulties. Despite these challenges, he remained active in the media until shortly before his hospitalization.
Family Conflicts During Hospitalization
Lanata's extended stay at the hospital was marked by disputes between his wife, Elba Marcovecchio, and his daughters Bárbara and Lola. These differences reached the courts, where it was decided that Bárbara would also have the authority to make decisions regarding her father’s health. Lanata's daughters accused Marcovecchio of harmful behavior, both for his health and his estate, allegations that his lawyer vehemently denied.
A Farewell That Leaves a Void
The death of Jorge Lanata marks the end of an era in Argentine journalism. His critical approach and ability to spark debates established him as an undeniable reference, leaving a legacy that will be remembered for generations. His followers, colleagues, and family bid him farewell with deep sorrow, as the entire country mourns the loss of one of its most emblematic voices.
