President Lai Ching-te highlighted the importance of tourism at the 2024 Taipei International Travel Fair
The 2024 Taipei International Travel Fair (ITF), held recently at the Nangang Exhibition Center, marked the first time President Lai Ching-te attended the opening ceremony. Organized by the Tourism Administration and the Taiwan Visitors Association, this fair is the largest and longest-running tourism platform in Taiwan, solidifying its position as one of the most significant events in Asia’s travel industry.
In its 38th edition, ITF Taipei brought together 1,500 exhibitors from 111 countries and regions, including ten diplomatic allies such as Paraguay and Guatemala. In his speech, President Lai praised the successful development of the event, especially in light of the challenges posed by Typhoon Kong-rey, and expressed his gratitude to the emergency personnel who ensured the safety of the fair. He also highlighted tourism as a tool for “soft power” and diplomatic force for Taiwan, reflecting the island’s growing global connectivity.
Moreover, President Lai shared his administration’s plans to promote green tourism as a response to climate change. Notable initiatives included unique travel experiences such as film tourism, Indigenous and Hakka village tours, railway adventures, and sports tourism, aiming to attract both domestic and international tourists. These strategies are designed to strengthen Taiwan’s tourism industry and encourage greater global interaction with visitors.
A Platform for Cultural Diversity and the Latest Travel Trends
This year, ITF Taipei focused not only on sustainability but also on immersive local experiences that allowed travelers to explore Taiwan's culture and landscapes firsthand. The fair offered a wide range of products, exclusive discounts, and themed experiences, such as accommodation vouchers and flight offers, as well as cultural performances and an international mascot parade, creating a festive and engaging atmosphere for visitors of all ages.
Local Taiwanese governments collaborated to promote cultural tourism, from agricultural tourism and ecotourism to activities related to the traditions of Indigenous tribes and Hakka communities. Additionally, the “Taiwan - Waves of Wonder” campaign was launched to showcase the island’s top tourist attractions and attract travelers interested in exploring Taiwan's natural and cultural wealth.
