Hamas Assault Shocks Israel: Hundreds Dead and Hostages Taken, Israel Vows "Mighty Vengeance"
Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories are in shock following a devastating escalation in the conflict between the Jewish state and Hamas, the Islamist group that controls the Gaza Strip. The situation escalated dramatically with a surprise Palestinian attack on a Jewish holiday, resulting in a high death toll, the seizure of numerous Israeli hostages, and increasing concerns of a broader regional conflict.
Unverified videos released by Hamas, the militant organization that seized control of Gaza in 2007, depict young Israelis held captive, their bodies covered in blood, hands bound behind their backs, and eyes filled with fear. Fierce battles between Hamas and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) continued to rage across southern Israel and the Palestinian enclave on Saturday.
Gunmen from the Palestinian group Hamas rampaged through Israeli towns on Saturday, killing at least 250 Israelis and escaping with dozens of hostages in by far the deadliest day of violence in Israel since the Yom Kippur war 50 years ago.
Israeli officials reported at least 250 casualties and more than 1,800 injuries in Israel, while the Red Crescent reported 92 injuries in the West Bank. On Israeli television, anguished family members of the deceased and those held hostage by Hamas tearfully recounted how their homes and communities came under attack while they slept.
In the Gaza Strip, the retaliatory Israeli airstrikes resulted in at least 232 deaths and 1,650 injuries, exacerbating the already dire state of the region's medical infrastructure.
"We will take mighty vengeance for this wicked day," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said.
"Hamas launched a cruel and wicked war. We will win this war, but the price is too heavy to bear," he said. "Hamas wants to murder us all. This is an enemy that murders mothers and children in their homes, in their beds. An enemy that abducts elderly, children, teenage girls."
Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh said the assault that had begun in Gaza would spread to the West Bank and Jerusalem.
The security situation in Gaza, Jerusalem, and the West Bank, already volatile, had been steadily deteriorating for a year and a half. However, no one on either side anticipated the scale and ferocity of what Hamas has dubbed "Operation al-Aqsa Deluge." This unprecedented offensive by Hamas, involving sea, air, and ground operations, has ushered in a harrowing new phase in the decades-old conflict. The Israeli security establishment's inability to prevent the attack could have long-lasting repercussions, much like the Yom Kippur War that began 50 years ago this week.
Reports from civilians in both Israel and Gaza reflect similar sentiments. Streets remain strewn with bodies and blood, and after nearly 12 hours of unrelenting combat with no signs of abatement, the situation is too volatile for the retrieval of the deceased.
