Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi handed over the G20 presidency gavel to Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva after concluding the two-day summit in Delhi.

 

The G20 Summit in Delhi came to a close, marking a significant milestone in international diplomacy. Prime Minister Narendra Modi symbolically passed the G20 presidency to Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva at the end of the event.

In his closing remarks, Prime Minister Modi expressed confidence that Brazil would lead with dedication and vision, promoting global unity and prosperity. The G20 Summit in Delhi has left a significant mark on the international agenda and efforts to address global challenges in an ever-changing world.

Here are the key highlights of this momentous gathering:

Homage to Mahatma Gandhi: On the second day of the summit, world leaders, including U.S. President Joe Biden, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, and French President Emmanuel Macron, joined Prime Minister Modi at Delhi's Rajghat to pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi. They laid wreaths and offered tribute at Mahatma Gandhi's samadhi and signed on the "wall of peace," underscoring the importance of Gandhi's ideals on a global scale.

Modi's Speech on the "Future": In the final session of the summit, titled "A Future," Prime Minister Modi emphasized the need to look beyond the concept of a "global village" and turn the vision of a "global family" into reality. He advocated for the expansion of the UN Security Council and reforms in all global institutions to reflect the "new realities" of the world. Modi highlighted that the number of permanent members on the UN Security Council remains unchanged since its inception, despite significant changes in the world.

Bilateral Meetings: Prime Minister Modi held bilateral meetings with various international leaders, including President Macron of France, Chancellor Olaf Scholz of Germany, leaders from Comoros, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, South Korea, the EU/EC, Brazil, Nigeria, and a separate meeting with Canadian President Justin Trudeau.

Joint Declaration with France: Following the meeting with Emmanuel Macron, India and France issued a joint declaration expressing their desire to promptly conclude the Defense Industrial Roadmap.

Intensive Diplomacy for Ukraine Agreement: Indian sherpa Amitabh Kant revealed that more than 200 hours of uninterrupted negotiations by a team of Indian diplomats were required to achieve a consensus on the New Delhi Declaration adopted on the first day of the G20 Summit. This part of the agreement focused on the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Proposal for a Virtual Summit in November: In his closing speech, Prime Minister Modi proposed a virtual summit in November to review the initiatives taken during India's G20 presidency. India's G20 presidency will officially continue until November 30, after which Brazil will assume leadership.
