President Biden's Call to End Remote Work Era for Feds Receives Praise from U.S. Travel Association

In a recent move to revitalize team culture and boost economic vibrancy, President Biden has urged federal employees to return to in-person work this fall, signaling an end to the era of remote work. The U.S. Travel Association Executive Vice President of Public Affairs and Policy, Tori Emerson Barnes, expressed her support for the administration's plan, recognizing its potential benefits beyond team dynamics.

"The Biden plan to return federal workers to the office will benefit far more than team culture. It is also critical to the success and vibrancy of American cities and the return of government travel, which has lagged. We applaud this directive and appreciate the boost this action will give to the economy," stated Barnes.

A recent report by the Government Accountability Office revealed that many federal agencies were operating at significantly reduced capacity, with 17 out of 24 agencies using only 25 percent or less of their headquarters buildings. The Biden administration's push to bring federal employees back to their physical workplaces comes as part of ongoing efforts to reestablish normalcy in the federal workforce.

In his State of the Union address in March 2022, President Biden pledged that the vast majority of federal workers would once again work in person. In April 2023, the Office of Management and Budget took further action by ending maximum telework and providing instructions to agencies to develop plans for increasing in-person work.

This move holds potential benefits for the economy, the success of American cities, and the revival of government travel, which has faced challenges due to the pandemic-induced shift to remote work. The return to in-person work is expected to inject vitality into various sectors, including travel and hospitality.

While the push for federal employees to return to offices gains momentum, the White House has refrained from commenting on specific details of the plan. Nevertheless, the U.S. Travel Association and various other stakeholders remain optimistic about the positive impact this shift will have on the nation's workforce and overall economic recovery.

As the nation navigates the path to post-pandemic normalcy, the Biden administration's commitment to reestablishing in-person work for federal employees is seen as a significant step in the right direction. With the support of organizations like the U.S. Travel Association, the push for a return to the office is expected to foster a sense of rejuvenation and boost economic activity across the country.
